The grand memorial statue to a great Queen and Empress standing almost at the doorway of Buckingham Palace, is best appreciated when lit against the nighttimes sky. This shows the contrast between the deep bronze figures and the snow white marble of the main centre-piece of the monument which is crowned with a glittering 13ft tall statue of Victoria.
The Queen Victoria memorial statue shows well the artistry of sculptor Thomas Brock and architect Sir Aston Webb, who designed the surround. The groups to the sides represent the strong Victorian values held dear by the Queen, thus the figures represent charity, justice, motherhood and courage, with the final flourish being added by a golden winged "Victory"!
The idea for the statue was conceived shortly after Queen Victoria's death in 1901, but it was not completed and in situ until 1911.
On grand ceremonial occasions visitors to London gather around the statue in the hope of getting a better view of Queen Elizabeth and her family as they drive out of Buckingham Palace.
